As One of our focus films for our exam we watched “Fight club” who was directed by David Fincher, which was made in 1999. It was adapted from the novel from the same name as the film by Chuck Palahniuk, it stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton. This film isnt the type of film i would watch normally but im glad i did, its quite a violent film but it has a good story. Its quite a depressing film as at the beginning of the film when you see tyler on the plane and he always thinks about dieing and we see a shot of the plane that he is on being wripped into two parts.

This film quite reflective as you can sort of relate to tyler as we find out at the end that he has different sides to his personality. Its a very confusing film and hard to follow but its really good at the way its been shot.

For the second part of my coursework we have to create a music magazine of our own, i never really buy music magazine but it will be interesting in buying one to find out whats in it and it should give me lots of ideas of what type of things to include. In Addition, as well as magazine a music magzine cover we have to create a contents page and a double page spread, i have already decided on what to include in my double page spread. My brother is in an indie band therefore i will include an interview with them,pictures of them and also their up-coming gigs.When i think of music magazines, the one that comes to mind is ‘kerrang’ and ’NME’, Kerrang is more of a heavy metal music magazine but NME is more of an Indie music magazine which would appeal more to me than kerrang as i prefer indie music.

This is the NME magazine cover, this magazine is more indie rock,they have stuck with the red writing. They advertise a band named ‘The last shadow puppets’ they show a certian amount of attitude but not to the extent some rappers do on a rap magazine cover. They also advertise indie artists and bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The courteeners,rolling stones,Jack White. This cover is very busy as there is a lot of writing on this but i think it doesnt take the attention off  the images of the two people as the picture is very bold, ive also noticed that the images on most magazines go ontop of the title.

This is the kerrang magazine front cover, as you can see from this cover its target audience is for people who like heavy metal music i know this from the band which is on the front ’30 seconds to mars’ they are very rocky and the colours they have used on the magazine as well, this cover is very dark and also the image of the 3 guys are very bold, the  two people on each side of the main singer are not ontop of the title as the main singer is therefore we know that he is the main singer of the band.The title of the magazine as well is very edgey and would appeal more to people who like heavy metal music.

 I have chosen to analyse a rap magazine so i can have a range of magzine covers to look at. I really like this magazine cover even though i dont partically like rap music i like some of  the artists that are on the front cover, like ‘Keri Hilson’. The outfits that the girls are wearing are very colour and eye catching, the colour of the clothes they are wearing match the colours of the  writing on the cover as well, also on some rap magazines the artists shows attitude but on this magazine cover the artists show they are having fun. The magazine is also advertising well known acts such as ‘The Game’, ‘Nelly’, ‘N.E.R.D’, ‘Leona Lewis’ and lots more. I really like the Title of the magazine and also the way it has been designed, this magazine i feel is more catching than the rest. The background of the magazine is plain but its very effective as it brings out the information on the magazine and also the colours.

For my magazine i will be creating an ‘Indie Music magazine’ as i prefere this type of music compared to rap therefore i will find it easier to create a magazine about a music compared to a type of music which i dont like.
for our course work we are creating a double page spread as well as a front cover,contents page. for my double page spread i am going to have an article of my brothers band and i will include their upcoming gigs and also pictures.

In addition, i will also be advertising real life bands on my magazine as well with the same genre of music that fits into my magazine. The bands i will be advertising are Arctic Monkeys,maccabees,Oasis,Just Jack,Kasabian etc.
i will also be advertising a free poster that you get with the magazine, the poster will include a new band on the scene which i thought would be a good idea as it gives them advertisement, ive decided to call them ‘Young Soul Rebels’

I have decided to name my music magazine ‘A’ as my influence is the ‘Q’ magazine i have decided to name my magazine A as the first letter of my name is A which i thought then i can make the magazine personal to me.

I am now looking at what type of font cover i should have, i have decided i will influence my magazine cover on florence and the machine, as she gives off a vibe that she doesnt care what people think of her which i like the idea of therefore i will be creating a magazine cover with that message.

 This is my front cover for my music magazine, the reason why i have chosen this picture to be my front cover is because i think its a really good photo as to how it is postitoned it took me a while to postiton the camera in the right place and also for the pose to be right. I have chosen to have a microphone for the product in the picture as the main story in the magazine will be of a solo artist.

with the stories on the front of the magazine, i have included a quote that is said in the main interview to attract peoples attention. The quote is ‘ Ive finally come out of my shell’ this fit in with what i want to get across in the magazine with the main story that she use to care what people think but not anymore.

 for my front cover it became landscape but you never see a magazine front cover which is landscape therefore i have had to change to portrait to make it look like an offical magazine cover.

 This is my magazine cover as portrait size, it definately looks better as portrait but i had to insert a background for the image to go on therefore i have chosen a black back ground as i think it sets off the image, also to take away the dullness of the plain black background i have added music notes at the top and the bottom of the front cover, i found these mucial notes on Dafont.com, its a very useful website as you can get any icons or writing on there, this is where i got the writing for my magazine cover.

As you can see i have moved the postition of the bar code and i thought it looked placed there in the top photo and it looked out of the place so therefore because i have alot of space in the second draft of my front cover i have chosen to postition it at the bottom of the magazine. With the image of kasabian and the free poster, as i have to have 5 photots i have taken myself i have decided to take a picture of my brothers band and make that into the free poster instead of using someone elses picture.

 here is my first draft of my contents page i have tried to link the front cover to the contents page with the colours and the stories that are on the front page. I thought this contents page was abit boring as it never had any colour therefore i have tried to add more colour,images and more stories to make it look like an offical contents page.

 Here is my final draft of my contents page, i have tried to add a little bit of colour to the background to make it look less boring i also have included my own little stories i have made up, i have also used pictures i have taken of my  brothers band on the right hand side, i thought these images would fit into one of the stories i have created.

For my main story in my magazine its about a new artist of 2009 who has hit the charts very quickly and ive made it look like its one of her first interviews so the readers who like her music will automatically buy it because its her very first interview and also so they get an idea of whats shes like.

In our coursework we have to either create a short sequence of a film or a screen play, therefore when we were told this i wanted to be partners with alice to make our film. Firstly before making any notes we thought about what type of films we watch and it totalled out that we mostly watch girl romantic films therefore we knew we wanted to make a romantic comedy film.

we then started to think up a typical storyline, our storyline is about Jennifer Wilson who is the only one out of her mates to settle down with a guy and she gets sick of being single and one night shes on the internet and a pop up comes up on the computer thats advertising a dating website, shes so down that she signs up….and little did she know what was on the otherside, on the other side is a guy called Jacob who is a property developer and hes just found out his last girlfriend only wanted him for his money therefore he is very down and he wants to meet someone who likes him for him not his pocket therefore he also signs up on a dating website which is the same as Jennifers.

We then thought about the characters and the actors that influence us the most therefore we chose to create a girl called Jennifer Wilson who is a girly girl,shopaholic a girl who eats fast foods but never gets fat, shes very clumsy and she works as a library assistent, also in her space time she walks her neightbours dog for extra money. Jennifer lives in a terrace flat in the middle of town where it is very busy and on her days off she likes to escape from the town to the countryside to write her novel. The reason why we have create a girl like this is because we are influenced by Jennifer Anniston as she is a brilliant actress and she also does alot of romantic comedy films such as ‘Marley and Me’ ‘Hes Just Not That Into You’ etc.

She is 24 and has her 3 main best friends, Fran who is very outgoing and crazy, Rachael who is very sensible and who is a workaholic and lastly Zoey who is the quite one. All these friends support Jennifer in everything she does.

The next Step we needed to take was to create a man who would fit into the type of person we wanted him to play therefore our male influence was ashton kutcher as he has done many films such as ‘Just Married’ and ‘Alot Like Love’. We decided on making the man character have the name Jacob, Jacob is property developer who lives in the country and is 26 years of age, he has alot of posh friends but in the film you wont see them as we concerntrate on Jennifer and Jacob.

we have decided on calling our film ‘All she wrote’ and the soundtrack we were going to use in the film was called all she wrote and also it fits in with the story of her writing her novel. With making this film me and alice has decided to not make this film as it would be too time consuming for the time we have therefore we have decided on working on our own but i will be creating a screenplay of this storyline as i feel it is a good idea to create.0

My film synopsis

my film is about a girl called Jennifer who hasnt had much luck in the romance department therefore she results to going onto a chat room to see whether she can find anyone who likes her for her personality, her friendstry to set her up with their boyfriends friends but she turns them down when she finds someone who is compatible with her on the chat room, she talks to this guy called Jacob every day and night, she is slowly falling inlove with him but she doesnt want to tell her friends as she hasnt met him before and they will find that its stupid and dangerous to love someone over the internet. The guy on the other end is called jacob, he is a property developer and he is also tired of not having a girl who likes him for him and not his money therefore he signs onto the same chat room as Jennifer and they start to talk. Little do they know they have seen eachother before but they havent realised that Jennifer has served Jacob in the library she works at.

Jennifer likes to escape to the countryside whenever she is feeling down or when she wants to write another chapter in her novel, she basis her novels on real life situations of her life. Her friends are veru supportive towards her but she feels uncomfortable sharing ideas about her novel therefore she confides in Jacob as she feels she can trust him. He reads her novel and realises its about him and her this makes him fall for her even more and to show his love for her he asks his friend who is a publisher to publish her book.

One day in winter just before christmas she walks past her favourite book store where she finds her novel on front display of the window, she is very confused to what has happened she instantly thinks that someone has stolen her novel so she rings up her friends to ask whether they have done anything to ger novel and they said no so she then goes into the to see someone buying her book, she walks up to him and asks to look at the book to see who has published it but it doesnt say. little does she know that its Jacob buying the book and she hasnt spoken to him, he realises its jennifer and asks what she thinks about her novel being published, he gets the reaction he wants therefore he decides to tell her its him.

she looks very shocked anf faints in the book store, the next thing she wakes up in the backroom of the store with jacob looking at her as she takes a moment to think how this has happened but she then doesnt care and walks over to jacob and kisses him.

On friday we watched ‘La Haine’, La Haine is a French Black and White film written, co-edited, and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and was released in 1995. This film is about three teenage friends and their struggle to live in Paris, the 3 teenagers differ from eachother in this film, Vinz is the one who is filled with rage and he thinks he will earn respect if he kills a policeman, Said is the talkitive one who is inbetween his two friends and there is Hurbert, he is a drug dealer and a boxer,he is the only one in the film who says he wants to live the town where they live as he can see him living there all his life which he doesnt want too.

This film shows us the other side to the french people, the french men are portrayed as violent people especially the police, the police nowadays are shown as to help people but in this film it shows them as very violent people. This film is about a friend of the 3 teenagers is who is brutially attack by the police before the riot started and he lies in a coma, Vinz finds a police gun which got lost in the riot and he is determinding to kill a policeman if his friend dies. All throughout the film we see the 3 teenagers going around causing trouble in the streets of france, they take the train to paris where they again cause trouble and once they go home in the morning a police car pulls up while hurbert is walking away and the policeman holds a gun to vinz face to scare him but accidently it goes off, killing vinz instantly.

This was the first film i had watched with subtitles and even though it was subtitled i really enjoyed the film, after getting use to reading the sub titles a few times i got used to watching the sub titles and watching there actions. I never expected Vinz to die at the end, i thought Hurbert would have killed the police officers as the police had killed his friend, but i like the kind of films when you expect something to happen and it doesnt happen the way you would expect it. I would definately recommend this film to a friend.

On 2nd october we watched the film “once were warriors” as apart of our course. Once were warriors is a 1994 film based on a novel by Alan Duff. This film is based in New Zealand as the author was from New Zealand and the film tells the story of an urbanMaori family and there problems with poverty, alcoholism and domestic which is mostly brought on by one memeber of the family who is the main trouble maker called Jake Keke.

  At the opening scene of the film we see a pan shot of the beautiful countryside of New Zealand and then it pans to the deprived areas of New Zealand, this  film gives us an insight of how people live in poverty and where this place is full of depression and violence.  

Beth Keke, the mother married Jake even though her parents disapproved of him, after 18 years of marriage they have 5 children which 4 of them live at home in a small deprived house. There is a scene in the film where Jake and Beth are having a party downstairs while the children are trying to sleep upstairs, in this scene we see that they all have to share a very small room, this shows that they havent got a enough money to get a bigger house especially when Jake looses his job at the beginning of the film. 

Grace who is there 13 year old daughter is the only character in the film to have any interest in education, she keeps a journal which she writes things about herself and also she keeps the stories she reads to her younger brothers and sisters. As i have said at the beginning of the film Jake looses his job therefore he cant support his children and when his wife starts to make him realise that they havent got any money, he sulks and goes off drinking with his friends to the local pub. Jake protrays himself as a laid back and easy going guy thats out for a good time but he also has a serious temper on him and becomes very violent. We see that he gets violent in the film when he has all his friends over and his wife starts to get “lippy” towards him and then he violently beats her up infront of his friends, this shows that he doesnt care of what people think of him and also it shows that he doesnt have any respect for his wife and children.

He also shows that he doesnt have any respect for his children because theres a scene in the film where he treats his daughter the way he treated his wife. His daughter grace, gets raped by his friends called uncle bully and she doesnt contront him about it because he wouldnt believe her because in his eyes his friends are golden and are always right. After walking to streets all night to get out of the house grace returns home and is about to go to bed when uncle bully wants a “kiss goodnight” grace refuses too and thats when jake gets angry and violent towards grace, he tears up her jounral she then runs off to the backyard, she is obvoiuisly upset that she had been raped and that her dad doesnt even care about her therefore she runs off to the backyward, beth than returns back home from looking for grace all night she then looks outside and finds grace had hung herself.

 This part of the film makes me upset as Jake doesnt care of anyone but himself he shows that he is selfish by not going to his daugthers funeral but instead he goes to his local pub and gets drunk with his friends. This part also makes me feel happy as Jakes friend doesnt get away with raping Grace because after the funeral Beth fixes her journal as Jake has ripped it up and she then reads that she was raped by uncle bully, she then goes to the pub where jake would be with his friends, she confronts bully but Jake is very rude to her by saying ” get the hell out of here” Beth tells Jake and Jake does what he does best is that he beats uncle bully up.Beth isnt suprised with Jakes reaction therefore she leaves with her children by her side and returns back to her maori village.

 This film is an emotional ride for all audiences i think because it gives you mixed emotions like laughter,sadness,hatred,revenage. Throughout this film it wasnt easy to watch as the beating of the Beth was graphic, so emotionally painful on screen. some of the scenes were so strong that you find yourself looking away, this violence in this film is the type of violence effects you because it is not special effect violence. 

 Even though this film was about poverty, depression and abuse i still thought it was a good film as it gave you an an idea of how some people actually live in real life, and it shows that not everyones life is perfect, i think this is why it grabbed my attention and i allowed myself to watch it to the end even though some of the scenes were very graphic, over its a very good film, I would never of thought to watch this sort of film but im glad i did as its probably one of my favourite films, I would definately recommend it.

On the first lesson we got the script from life on mars drama, and we decided on who was going to play certian acts in the scene. After we chose who was going to be who, we set out to film the scene in an interview room at school.

we then thought about the props and the lighting, the lighting of the room that we used was perfect as there was a hole in the ceiling for a window and it shone down onto the desk that we put in there to make it look like an interview room. After the actors had learnt their lines we took it in turns to film some of the shots in the room, after we had a go at filming we watched them back and then started to edited the scene we had shot with a program called “Imovies” on a lap top at school. While editing this scene we are also taking it in turns to edite the piece to bruden our knowledge of the program for when we start to make our own movie for our coursework.As we were editing the scene we were looking for music to put into the scene to build up the tension for the viewers.

For my small scale research I will be looking at one of the most successful directors of all times, Steven Spielberg and how he has crossed over to different genres throughout the years. The reason why i have chosen to research this particular director because i really enjoy certain films he has made and also i feel he is one of the best directors around. The three films i will be looking at are ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Hook’ and ‘Catch me if you can’, the reason why i have chosen these films is because they are so different and they are good films that differ from eachother.

As part of my course work this year I will be creating my own school magazine. originally my magazine was a photography issue magazine but i have decided to change the idea as it wasn’t a good idea as my target audience wouldn’t be a large sum of pupils but instead I have decided to create a normal school magazine but i am still keeping the idea of having a photography piece in it. Therefore i have decided to promote a double spread about photography.  The name of my magazine will be still be called “IMAGE” as it can be precisived as either a photo image or your physical appearence at school.

As the front image I have taken an 2 images one of them is a long shot of me holding a camera but the image isnt as strong as my second photo. The second photo is of myself holding a cannon camera, I thought this image was a good image to use as it is relivant to what my magazine is about and also the image is stronger than the first image. The postitioning of this image is good as the central piece of the image is the camera, I will now edit this image on photo shop to make the image stand out more, i may try using different colours in the image, or even using black and white can be effective so therefore i will be editing this image so the audience of this type of magazine will buy it.

Today i am editing the image on fireworks program at school as i am starting to make my magazine cover, i have taken the image above and have desaturated the image so it turns black and white then i i have colour the top in red and also the hands that are holding the camera and i have also have cut out the black background to make it more bold to look at and also it would give me more room to put my title of my magazine. Here is the image of what i am creating now, Ive edited the image by putting a boarder around the magazine as the same colour as the top in the image but i feel it doesn’t look good as a black and white image in certain places therefore i am going to go back to the orginal image so it would look more colourful and will stand out more.

On the front cover I will be advertising the stories that will be in the magazine, as it is a school magazine orginally I will be having stories in the magazine like;

• Horoscopes
• What type of photgrapher are you? (quiz)
• what type of friend are you? (quiz)
• Wordsearch
• Study Tips

  To get ideas of what type of magazine I am going to create, I have created a questionnaire on what type of things I should have in my magazine but as i was focused on having a photography issue i will be changing that idea as well it doesnt fit in with my second idea, I will make my questionnaire more about what the audience want to see in the magazine i will be making for the whole school. The results of the questionnaire has definately helped me out with knowing what the audiences are looking for in a school magazine.

The results of the questionnaires tells me as the creator of the magazine what the school audience wants to see, it tells us they want to see large colour fonts and striking images to draw the attention of the public. The results also  tell me what they dont want to see in a school magazine as well, all the things i would have thought would be very popular in a magazine wasnt therefore i am glad i did create a questionnaire so i can get a  true reading of what my target audience wants.

After recieving the results i created a tally chart to make it alot easier to read the results of the questionnaire, in the results the audience wants exclusive stories, strong images, colourful writing etc therefore i have tried to use the colours that were the most popular and the stories they would like to see in it. With the colour of the writing and my image, some of the popular colours didnt stand out from the picture therefore i have used the next most popular colour, as i know from the survey the image is the most important thing for a magazine as everyone has either said the reason why the buy a magazine is the font and the colour of it and also the image. therefore i feel the image i have chosen is a good choice.

FONT

The font i have used is from Dafont.com it allows you to choose a style you want and it was very handy as well because i never knew any websites that did fonts. When i chose the right font i want i print screened the page then copied it onto microsoft word then cropped it down to the font i wanted then copied and pasted it onto my front cover. On my front cover i tried to stick to the same font as i didnt want it to look messy but now i have used the same font on the cover i feel it looks professional and tidy.

Images

The images on my front cover i have taken myself, the image that advertises for the friendship quiz is just a random image i found on my computer but i thought it would be a good idea to use that as it shows two best friends therefore i thought it would be relevant.

The other image in the right hand corner i have taken myself, i thought it would be relevant to take a picture of someone sitting on the computer as i wanted to advertise revision tips for the pupil at st edmunds as it is a whole school magazine, with both the images i have cut out the backgrounds as the backgrounds in both of the photos distracted you from the actual image itself therefore it cut the backgrounds out.

The reason why i have chosen a pacific font for the name of the magazine “image” was because in my survey that was the most popular font therefore i used it, i tried it fill it will different colours i changed it to orange but because the font is very rough looking it didnt look right with the orange and you couldnt see what it said clearly, i then tried every other colour but it was still the same problem therefore i thought i would stick with the original font colour and it make it more colourful i coloured the other fonts in with the most popular colour from my questionnaire.

Star

At the beginning of making this magazine i was going to charge £1.00 for the magazine but that was because my target audience at that time was for each school in the country but because i have changed my idea to just the pupils in my school i have decided to make the magazine free because results shown from my questionnaire show that not many people would buy a school magazine so when i created my magazine i tried to make the “free” part stand out therefore i took a star image off google images and cut out the background and placed the “free” font in the image.

Slogan

When i finished creating my cover i saw that i needed something on the magazine because it was too plain therefore i looked at other magazines to see what kind of slogans they have and because my magazine is about school i thought i would create a slogan saying “No.1 best school magazine” which gives the illusion that this magazine has been around for many years.

Exclusive double page spread

The reason for creating and advertising a photography double page spread inside was because my first idea was for my magazine being a whole magazine about photography that was targeted for all schools around England, i then thought about what was going to relate to every secondary school in England and it was very difficult to think of anything therefore i thought about changing it for this school but i think thought about who would buy this sort of magazine in the school and the audience wasnt very large, so i then changed it to just a normal school magazine. In additon i am going to keep with the photography theme so i thought it would be a good idea to advertise a double page spread of photography on the front cover.

October Issue

From the questionnaire results it shows that 9/10 people thinks that a school magazine should come out every month therefore i have found a nice plain font off Dafont.com and created a font saying “october issue” as i actually created the magazine in october,also i changed the colour of the font to a dark red which stands out against the yellow star therefore i have put the writing on the star where there is a space. 

CONTENTS PAGE

 The second part of my coursework for this magazine was to create a contents page for my magazine, i wanted to create a really funky contents page but yet it has to fit into the theme of a school magazine, therefore i have taken an image of lined paper off google image and as i am still using the fireworks program on the schools computer i have copied and pasted the image into it.

On creating my contents page i have looked at various contents pages in many magazines and i have decided i want to go for a more relaxed approach as it is a school magazine therefore i will be advertising horocopes page,photopgrahy information,picture of the month where readers can send in their most funniest picture they have taken and it will be published in the next months issue,this month through pictures, friendship quiz,wordsearch and many more. All these adverts have to page numbers therefore i have been careful to choose how many pages in total my magazine will have and i have decided for it to be 30, therefore i have advertised my double page spread as page 14-15.

Fonts

I have tried to use similar types of font for the contents page as i have with the front cover and i also used the same internet website called dafont.com as well. With producing something for my target audience i have tried to put the writing in the colours they liked the most out of my questionnaire therefore most of the fonts are in blue,orange etc.

some magazines i have looked at have editors messages in therefore i have decided to create my own editiors messgae, i have tried to tie it into the “pic of the month” therefore my editiors messgae says “Hello readers, from now on in each monthly issue i will be asking readers to send their funniest photos of the month and it will be published every month,if you have any funny photos please send them to:  11Harley street, dover,kent CT14 8TF” with this idea i feel that this magazine will get alot of attention as the students will want to see whos in the next issue in ‘pic of the month’.

In making this magazine i had struggled with what sort of audience i wanted to aim my magazine at but after that obsticle i started to create this magazine cover and contents page, it was very difficult in getting students from difference years to fill my questionnaire out as i hardly know anyone from other years. The other obsticale i had to get across was what to have on my front cover and contents page therefore i looked up some magazines that are aimed at the age i want my target audience to be therefore i took at least two ideas off each magazine then i picked which ones would have suited my magazine better therefore when i found the stories i wanted to put on there i included them in my magazine questionnaire.

In this blog I will be analysing a magazine cover of my choice. Here I have chosen a fashion magazine called ‘Vogue’. Vogue is a fashion and a lifestyle magazine which is published in eighteen different countries by Cond’e N publications. Each month Vogue publishes a magazine which addreses Fashion, life and design.I have chosen the American ‘Vogue’ magazine to analyse because the Americans strive on Fashion therefore when they create a Fashion magazine they try very hard to make it eye catching for the readers and I feel that the photographer of this front cover has positioned the the model and the colour brilliantly.

The target audience for this Vogue magazine is either for fashion designers and also members of the public who live in a high society. The reason why I have chosen to analyse it is because the cover stands out compared to any other magazines I have researched. The first thing that stands out from the magazine is the image of the Woman who is in a classy dress and also the colour of the dress as well, the colour of the dress is in a bright sexy pink and the writing is also in the sexy pink colour,therefore I feel this magazine is designed for women. Even though the dress is very bright, the other thing that makes the image of the woman even greater is the plain white background which the photogragher has used which emphasis the colour of the dress and also the beauty of the model.

On the front cover of the magazine they advertise the inner contents of the magazine, by promoting the inner contents of the magazine they have chosen to use the same colour font as the models dress for the main stories but for the little stories in the magazine have used a different font and also a different colour which is black, this also attracts the audience attention.
